In this fast changing scenario of our developing country, the concept of education has acquired eclectic hues. It covers all aspects of social conduct that man needs to possess in order to succeed in life. Stress on co-curricular evaluation which includes attitude ,values ,skills such as social skills, creative skills, emotional skills and organizational skills etc, apart from the regular cultural activities , is a very relevant and much needed change brought about by CBSE in recent times. This has necessarily led to specific curriculum design incorporating opportunities for students to experience, learn and develop these characteristics.
With this as the aim we introduced ‘Clubs’ in our school. Although still in nascent stage, the scholastic and co-scholastic activities of these Clubs are gaining strength with time.
The Heritage Club was established with the aim to involve students in working together to protect and preserve the wonderous beauty and richness of India's culture.
The Heritage Club has 87 students and 8 teachers associated with it. In every meeting atleast one place, person, monument, tree or a piece of art and craft of cultural and historical importance is discussed. As a practical activity they have been taught the art of tye and dye. They have collected information on places of historical importance in J&K.
Students are curious, active learners with individual interests, abilities and needs. They learn by attaching meaning to what they do and they need to construct their own meaning of Mathematics. This meaning is best developed when learners encounter mathematical experiences that proceed from the simple to the complex and from the concrete to the abstract. It is important for students to understand that Mathematics is not static but dynamic. At all levels students benefit from working with a variety of material, tools and contents when constructing meaning about new mathematical ideas.
Our Math Club was created to inculcate deep interest in the children towards this subject. The main objective of the club is to explore Maths beyond text book, and apply it in day to day life. The members are the students of classes VI to class X. On every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month children and teachers of this club meet. Activities like Maths quiz, Puzzle game, learning different concepts by activity, playing with the Chinese tan gram, are held. In future we have a plan to conduct interschool Math’s quiz, workshop, seminar on famous mathematicians etc. Basically the Club aims to make Maths fun for everyone. After all every child should enjoy the subject rather than doing it forcefully.
In order to ensure whole hearted participation of the students in various activities of their interest, clubs were set up in the beginning of the session 2011-12. Literary Club was one among others such as Science Club, Heritage Club, Math’s Club and Eco Club.
The students were given choice to join any of the Clubs. Thirty five students from class VI to X enrolled themselves in the Literary Club. The majority of the language teachers (Eng, Hindi, Urdu and French) are associated with this Club. The students are not restricted to express themselves in one language only but they have the liberty to make any language the medium of their expression.
It is, really, heartening to see the students enthusiastically participating in a variety of activities undertaken so far .
There are two periods a week set apart for Club activities. The Club meetings take place on Saturdays. No doubt it is a humble beginning and judging from the response of the members and their curiosity, we are hopeful that the Club will play an important role in achieving its goal of providing a fruitful and effective platform to the students to display their literary potential under the proper guidance of their teachers.
With a constitutional objective to associate the students of our school to enhance their environmental values and to protect the integrity of campus, our school established an Eco Club on 27th Nov. 2008. The Club started its working under the close supervision of Mrs Sonu Puri as the teacher – incharge along with Ms Subeena Dogra, Mrs Ravinder Kour, and Mrs. Sumriti Dogra as its member teachers. The Club owes its existence and life to hard work put in by member students of class VI and above. Eco – Club commenced its functioning with objectives mentioned as below.
- To promotete environmental awareness
- To promote spirit of unity amidst diversity
- To promote campus cleanliness and a strong resolution against any kind of organic misuse
- To promote scientific temper and attitude
Aim of Science Club is to develop scientific temper and make the children wonder. It also aims at making them curious to know about their surrounding and ‘How’ & ‘Why’ things work.
In order inculcate the above thought process amongst the children we design some activities such as- Making and understanding Solar heating devices.
- Understand natural disasters, their reasons and discussing the various ways by which their onset may be predicted.
It is a humble beginning with more than 200 students. We have further planned various visits to “small scale Industries” in and around Jammu.
Our teacher members of science Club also contribute in grooming students for ‘Science Congress’ Project(s). EVS projects and various Science Awareness programmes.
Although this Club has not yet been founded, the criteria for selection of its student-members has been laid down. Membership of this Club will be purely on merit. Students succeeding in the preliminary round of Cyber Olympiad would be eligible to be a part of this Club. They would be specially trained and prepared for next levels of Olympiad under the guidance of Computer and IT experts.
